How to launch the preferences window for plank

After installing, tweaking, and restarting plank on my new Linux VM, I was unable to relaunch the preferences panel by clicking on the dock. To launch the preference panel again, I just needed to pass the --preferences flag when starting plank.

$ plank --preferences

run plank with the preferences flag

plank running with preference panel
